What kinds of ideas about presentation skills did you think about as Sir Ken Robinson presented his ideas about education?
As Sir Ken Robinson presented his TED talk, I picked up on a few mechanisms he used to engage and interest the audience. For example, Sir Ken Robinson used humor to portray events that were actually serious. By using humor, Sir Ken Robinson could relate to the audience more deeply. Another skill Sir Ken Robinson used when presenting was metaphors. He compared the education system to many different events and objects that appealed to the audience and played on their emotions. Using these particular presentation skills made Sir Ken Robinson's speech more effective.
How could you incorporate what you saw into your own TED talk?
By following Sir Ken Robinson's lead, I could use his skills at presenting ideas to make my own presentation more effective. First of all. I would take animal issues from around the world, like poaching, and relate it to my topic. I would then proceed to state statistics, because some people, like myself, are more inclined to believe an idea if there are numbers to back it up. Finally, I would make sure to give the audience ways they can make a difference in their own community, no matter how big or how small.
How did Sir Ken Robinson's talk resonate with you?
My heart and soul agree with Sir Ken Robinson's speech on how schools kill creativity. Too much pressure is being put on students to do well on exams and tests so their school can receive a higher grade. By focusing primarily on this aspect of school, students have begun just memorizing information instead of learning it and then applying it in the real world. If schools would stress less over tests scores and more on learning and making sure kids enjoy going to school, I believe students would be more intelligent.
How might or might not Genius Hour support Ken Robinson's ideas about how to change education?
Genius Hour supports Sir Ken Robinson's ideas about how to change education because Genius Hour is about creativity. One hour a week students spend time researching anything they want and making a project from it. Giving students a chance to relax, genius hour allows students to be creative with their project. For example, someone might be really into fishing, and they want to learn how to build a fishing rob. Well, during Genius Hour time that student can research how to build a fishing rod and begin building one, probably at home.
